History of South Sudan
In 2011, South Sudan gained its’ independence from the Republic of Sudan. Its capital city is Juba. In 2013, there was a civil war that resulted in 1.4 million people who fled their homes by the end of 2014. One third of the population faced critical food shortages. By 2016, there was an estimated 2000 South Sudanese asylum seekers crossing into Uganda daily, and by 2017, there was one million South Sudanese refugees in Uganda. Although life started to settle down by late 2017, there were already 6 million South Sudanese people who did not have enough food to sustain themselves, and 60% of this population comprised of children. Nearly 48% of this population are under the age of 14 and are now orphaned and homeless.

Hands for Homeless Orphans in South Sudan
South Sudan is the poorest country in the world, due to a premature economy and civil unrest. South Sudan suffered decades of civil war before it was declared as a nation in 2011. South Sudan faces a multitude of challenges in providing its population with adequate education, health services, clean water, and roads and basic infrastructure. Yirol, although it is the capital city of Eastern Lakes State in South Sudan, is one of the poorest cities, not only because it lacks basic infrastructure but also due to its remoteness (the trip from Juba to Yirol can take an entire day).
Hands for Homeless Orphans is a registered non-for-profit organisation in Australia. The charity was established and originally named as Africa Coptic Care in 2017, with a clear vision to help homeless orphans in Africa and Asia with shelter, education, and health services. Since then, South Sudan, the poorest country in the world for the last 10 years, was elected for the initiation of charity projects there. We started in a small country town called Yirol in the Eastern Lakes State. We received a block of land (40,000 sqm) and we are building an orphanage and also building primary schools and secondary schools for girls. Our next project, for 2021, is to build a craft school. The goal is to teach theoretical and practical skills for becoming a plumber, electrician and wielder. Simultaneously, we are aiming to establish a primary healthcare clinic within the premises that not only serves the hosted orphans but also provides health services to the community.
